Estonia folkdancers SOPRUS

The Estonian folkdance ensemble Sõprus, which translates to Friendship, has been performing successfully for the last 65 years.

“Sõprus” was created by Ilma Adamson, who began as a dancer in the group and who worked as the chief choreographer of the ensemble for forty years. The baton has been passed on to the new teachers Kätrin Järvis and Agne Kurrikoff- Herman.

How big is “Sõprus”?

Today the ensemble consists of approximately 150 dancers. Many of them started dancing in their early childhood and have been dancing with the group for the last 10 to 20 years, while a new group of boys and girls started last autumn.

Some of the veteran dancers still meet up a couple of times a year to join the active dancers during various club activities and concerts. Soprus also have a live folk music group  to play for the dancers

What does “Sõprus” dance?

The dance collection consists of about three hundred different dances. Besides the Estonian dances , as an interesting part of our repertoire, there are dances from about forty different nations.

The inspiration of these dance pieces has been brought to us from the various dance festivals and performances.

The joy and love of dancing has brought “Sõprus” to various parts of the world including most European countries, Canada, Algeria, Japan, the USA and Russia.

They like to bring the culture of their Estonian nation with them through their dances.
