Damhsa the Cork International Folk Dance Festival has, since its inception in 1995, brought folk dance groups from some of the most diverse cultures throughout Europe and the world to perform in Cork.
Due to the support and enthusiasm from people in Blarney, Cobh, Dunmanway and Mallow other local festivals have been organised.
The Cork International Folk Dance Festival fills a void in Irish events. Ireland despite its rich heritage, remains lacking in its support for traditional dance with very few dance festivals of its own.
In this year's festival we host groups from the Canada, India, Philippines and Russia, who will teach us their folk dances and give workshops to young people around the county. Fun is a major element in the festival meeting young people from different cultures and making lasting friendships and understanding people from other lands.
The visiting groups to Damhsa are bordering on professional dancers and put on the most wonderful performances. The concert in the City Hall is a spectacular two and a half hour show not to be missed.
Many performances are free to the public, create a great atmosphere in the towns in which they perform and leave lasting memories.
Damhsa the Cork International Folk Dance Festival is to introduce folk dancing from other countries to Ireland and its young people so that they might appreciate their own Irish dancing and culture.
